Stephen's words were very damning , but they weren't that different from Lincoln's. We now know he had very similar opinions about slaves. He considered numerous radical options to end slavery including sending all slaves to their own island. Intergration wasn't high on his list of good solutions. Washington noted the inferiority (ie. laziness) of his slave laborers. Balanced context is required to capture the complexity of this issue.
